Dunkin’ Donuts debuts waffle sandwich

CANTON Mass. Dunkin’ Donuts introduced Wednesday a toasted waffle sandwich as a limited-time offer available through March 17, and priced at a franchisor-suggested $2.99.

The oven-toasted sandwich contains cherrywood smoked bacon, scrambled eggs and American cheese, all between two maple-infused waffles, the company said in a statement.

Dunkin’ Donuts spokeswoman Michelle King said consumer response to the limited-time offer would determine whether the sandwich becomes a permanent menu item for the 8,000-unit chain. The waffle sandwich is the latest in a line of new breakfast offerings from Dunkin’, including egg white flat bread sandwiches and omelet sandwiches.

According to consumer research group The NPD Group, breakfast is the only major daypart still growing for the restaurant industry. For the 12 months ended in November 2008, breakfast traffic rose 1 percent over the previous year.

Dunkin’ Donuts is part of Canton-based Dunkin Brands Inc., which franchises more than 13,000 restaurants worldwide.
