Oregon county mulls menu labeling

PORTLAND Ore. Health officials in Multnomah County, which includes Portland, presented county commissioners Thursday with the outline of a proposal to require quick-service restaurants to post nutrition information at the point of sale.

The board of commissioners took no action on the plan, which grew out of an effort last year to ban the use of artery-clogging trans fats in restaurants. Rather than instituting that ban, however, the board voted to pursue educational options.

Health officials contend that offering consumers more information about the nutrition content of fast food would enable them to make more healthful choices.

Mike McCallum, chief executive of the Oregon Restaurant Association, said the menu-labeling plan is still in the talking stage, but that the group would fight any proposed mandates that might result.
