LOS ANGELES A judge here reportedly has overturned a county ordinance that required taco trucks and other mobile food vendors to relocate every hour or face steep fines.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved the rule in April after restaurant owners complained that food vendors were parking near their establishments and stealing business.
Under an earlier rule, catering trucks had to move every 30 minutes, but the fine for violators was only $60, which many vendors simply paid. The ordinance passed in April doubled the time that vendors could stay in one place, but hiked up the fine to $1,000. Violators also faced as much six months in jail.
In his ruling on Wednesday, Judge Dennis Aichroth of the Los Angeles County Superior Court called the ordinance "too ambiguous to be enforceable," according to an Associated Press report.
Aspokeswoman for the lawmaker who introduced the measure told the AP that the county planned to appeal Aichroth's ruling.
