Hooters opts for heft in football-season items

ATLANTA Hooters of America is attempting to capitalize on the upcoming football season by introducing five seasonal menu items that it hopes will appeal to gridiron fans.

The specials include a new “boneless wings” appetizer made from chicken breast meat, battered to order and then shaken in a choice of seven sauces. The Training Burgers are mini-versions of the Hooters Classic More than a Mouthful Burger, available in orders of four or six. Each is topped with American cheese, mustard and pickles and served with the chain’s fried onion Tanglers.

The 435-unit chain also is adding three sandwiches that it says are “large enough to satisfy anyone’s hunger well into overtime.” The Double “D” Burger is a double-decker sandwich consisting of a pound of fresh ground beef topped with fried onion straws, cheese, bacon, sauteed onions and mushrooms.

The Sunday Pot Roast Sandwich is a serving of seasoned pot roast topped with sauteed onions and melted provolone cheese and served with a side of Dijon horseradish sauce. The sandwich is served on Texas Toast, the chain’s oversized bread slices.

The Double BLT has nearly a half pound of hickory-smoked bacon topped with lettuce and tomato and is served on Texas Toast.

All items except the Double “D” Burger are priced at $7.99 and will be featured in TV spots on Fox and ESPN.

Scott Kinsey, corporate chef of franchisor Hooters of America Inc., said the new items exceeded the company’s expectations in tests conducted during the summer. The company owns or operates namesake restaurants in 44 states and 22 foreign countries.
