Halo halo, which means “mix mix” in Filipino, is a traditional shaved ice dessert. It’s traditionally topped with tropical fruit, evaporated milk, and a variety of items such as sweetened beans and yams that in flavor, texture or both are not what Americans tend to look for in desserts.
Chef Dale Talde puts his own spin on halo halo, starting with a simple syrup flavored with coconut water and infused with lemon grass and chile. That is poured over shaved ice, which is then topped with tapioca pearls, coconut jellies, young coconut, wok-seared bananas and condensed milk. It’s finished with a sprinkling of Cap’n Crunch cereal. A large bowl, meant for four diners, is $8, and is served with smaller bowls and a serving spoon.
It is the only dessert on the menu.
