Boston Market: With all of its legal and financial problems that have compounded over the past several years, it’s no surprise that Boston Market had the largest percentage of store closures last year, with 67.5% unit decline, according to the Top 500 data.
O’Charley’s: This Tennessee-based casual-dining and bar chain’s portfolio trimming was no secret. Last year, the chain made the decision to shutter 17% of its stores as an attempt to get back on track after a rough pandemic era.
Au Bon Pain: The once-trendy bakery café chain is no longer quite as popular as it used to be with 45% unit decline last year. In 2021, the former Panera Bread sister brand was sold to a new owner (Ampex, a Yum Brands franchisee), and since then Au Bon Pain has shrunk to less than half the size it was under Panera ownership (115 to 55 units).
Corner Bakery: After declaring bankruptcy in 2023 under the then-ownership of Rohan Group (the same people that currently own Boston Market), the bakery-café chain shuttered 34 units and is now planning a comeback with new owners SSCP Management Inc.
