McD adds second Snack Wrap

OAK BROOK Ill. McDonald’s has extended its snack line, touted by the quick-service giant as a major reason for its recent financial success, with the rollout today of the Honey Mustard Snack Wrap. Like its predecessor, the Ranch Snack Wrap, the new item is priced as a slight step-up from the chain’s Dollar Menu, at $1.29.

The new wrap consists of either a deep-fried or grilled chicken breast strip, garnished with iceberg lettuce, cheddar jack cheese and a honey mustard sauce, all wrapped in a soft flour tortilla.

Some markets are offering a third Snack Wrap, also made with a chicken strip but spiced with a roja sauce, described in promotional materials as "fire-roasted tomatoes and jalapenos, with onions, cilantro and a touch of lime." It, too, sells for $1.29.

McDonald’s will offer free samples of the new Honey Mustard version at such special events as the NBA All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas, the Mexican National Team soccer clinic and kick-off game, and spring break in Panama City Beach.

The new deep-fried wrap contains 320 calories, with 130 of them from saturated fat, while the grilled version contains 260 calories, with 80 of them from fat, according to McDonald’s nutrition analysis.

McDonald’s Corp. officials cited the Snack Wrap as a key reason for the chain’s world same-store sales gain of 6.3% for the fourth quarter of 2006.
