Fast-food sales, Burger King-China, TGI Fridays

Fast-food chain same-store sales have been weak this year, except for Taco Bell. Parent company Yum Brands said on Tuesday that the Mexican brand’s same-store sales increased 4% last quarter. At Restaurant Brands International, meanwhile, Burger King’s same-store sales fell 0.4%

Speaking of RBI, Burger King has terminated its master franchisee in China. RBI said on Tuesday that it is in discussions for an amicable resolution to its dispute with the operator. Burger King is struggling in China, even as it thrives in many other international markets.

After TGI Fridays filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last weekend, the expected finger-pointing began. Most chains explicitly outline the confluence of issues leading to such a move in their filings, but TGI Fridays’ recent challenges seem especially unique given the company’s inability to keep steady leadership over the past year and a half.
