A look back at Subway's company milestones

Subway CEO Fred DeLuca co-founded the chain in 1965, in Bridgeport, Conn., at the age of 17, with family friend Dr. Peter Buck. The chain was originally called Pete's Super Submarines.

Subway began franchising in 1974. The first franchised unit was located in Wallingford, Conn.

In 2013, DeLuca discussed Subway's online "business simulation" game and ongoing plans for global growth.

In 2014, Subway said it would deploy mobile payments via the Softcard provider.

In 2015, Subway said DeLuca's sister Suzanne Greco would take a larger role at the company.
