CARPINTERIA Calif. Carl’s Jr., the 1,185-unit quick-service chain that grew from a single hot dog cart, is recalling its past by offering for a limited time a new Jumbo Chili Dog.
The Jumbo Chili Dog features a large hotdog topped with spicy beef chili, mustard and chopped onions. The chili dogs will be sold in pairs for $3 at participating restaurants.
When Carl’s Jr. founder Carl N. Karcher and his wife, Margaret, opened their hot dog cart in 1941, the price of a chili dog was 20 cents. Hot dogs and chili dogs remained on the chain’s menu into the 1990s, officials said.
“We’ve had great success in recent years with Chili Cheeseburgers and Chili Cheese Fries, so it made sense to give another all-American standard a try, especially since chili dogs have a nostalgic meaning for us,” said Brad Haley, executive vice president of marketing at Carl’s Jr.
Carl’s Jr. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Carpinteria-based CKE Restaurants Inc. CKE is also parent to the 1,912-unit Hardee’s quick-service chain.
