As CEO, Schultz built the chain to about 2,800 units before stepping down as CEO in 2000, taking the role of chairman, according to CNN Money.

Schultz returned as CEO in 2008, following a leaked memo in which he warned about the “commoditization of the Starbucks experience.” Upon his return, Schultz launched an aggressive turnaround plan, shuttering underperforming units.

Over the course of 2011 and 2012, Starbucks acquired Evolution Fresh, Teavana and La Boulange. It would eventually shutter all three.

Over the years Schultz has spoken up on a variety of political issues. In 2015 the company launched a short-lived campaign called Race Together, in which baristas were encouraged to engage with customers about race relations.

Starbucks launched mobile ordering and payment in late 2014 and expanded it in June 2015. The company has continued to make digital initiatives a high priority.

In 2016, Starbucks invested in boutique Italian bakery Princi, which began providing artisan products to the coffee chain’s Roastery and Reserve locations. This was part of a shift toward more premium brands.

At the end of 2016, Starbucks announced that Schultz would be stepping down as CEO and named Kevin Johnson, previously president and chief operating officer, as his successor. The move was made official in April 2017.

In 2017, Starbucks introduced its first extreme limited-time offer, the Unicorn Frappuccino. The beverage made a big splash on social media and led to further menu innovation.

Starbucks opened its second Reserve Roastery, and its first abroad, in Shanghai in late 2017. Moving into 2018, the company made a commitment to focus on its growth in China, where a Starbucks is currently opening every 15 hours.

Last month, Starbucks closed 8,000 locations for an afternoon to conduct racial-bias education among employees. The move followed an April racial-profiling incident at a Starbucks in Philadelphia.

On Monday, Schultz announced that he will be stepping down as executive chairman as of June 26, at which time he will be given the title of chairman emeritus.

Schultz has remained cryptic on his future plans, stating in a letter to employees, “I’ll be thinking about a range of options for myself, from philanthropy to public service, but I’m a long way from knowing what the future holds.” Many speculate that he may have a future in politics. This week, Schultz told CNBC: “Let’s just see what happens.”
