The Next Gen: True Food Kitchen

Next Gen brands are on the rise and on the cusp of breaking into the Top 200

This is part of the Nation’s Restaurant News annual Top 200 report, a proprietary ranking of the foodservice industry’s largest restaurant chains and parent companies.

What is it? True Food Kitchen specializes in providing a rotating menu of food and beverages created with seasonal and nutritious ingredients. The brand aims to accommodate all kinds of dietary needs and encourage healthful eating without sacrificing great taste. The chain was founded in 2008 by Sam Fox, CEO of Fox Restaurant Concepts, and Dr. Andrew Weil, a doctor of integrative medicine and wellness author.

Growth drivers: The company announced in July that Oprah Winfrey made an equity investment and joined the board. The media mogul’s passion for the brand and her wide following are expected to accelerate its development, according to CEO Christine Barone. True Food Kitchen also plans to double its unit count over the next three years, with locations to open in Nashville, Tenn., and Jacksonville, Fla., later this year. Additional units are planned for Kansas City, Mo., and Austin, Texas, in 2019. The restaurant has a national partnership with DoorDash and expects to launch online ordering later this year.

Price point: $5-$7.50 for refreshers and teas; $10-$12 for cocktails; $9-$15 for vegetables, starters, pizzas and salads; $15-$25 for bowls, sandwiches and entrées.

Headquarters: Phoenix

The figures shown in the graphic above reflect Top 200 data for the Latest Year, with a fiscal year-end of December 2017.
