Boston Market crows about health benefits of 2 new items

GOLDEN Colo. Boston Market is touting the healthful qualities of two new menu items: cherry cobbler and baked whitefish.

In a statement announcing the additions, the fast-casual chain described the new items’ main ingredients as “superfoods” abounding in nutritional benefits.

“The Montmorency tart cherries used in the cobbler are a rich source of antioxidants, which can help fight cancer and heart disease,” the statement said.

Whitefish “provides omega-3 fatty acids, which some studies say may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, stimulate blood circulation, and help patients with depression and anxiety,” the statement said.

“As different foods rise in popularity or studies are released detailing the health benefits of certain foods, we look for ways to incorporate them into our menu,” said Bruce Springer, Boston Market’s director of research and development.

The cherry cobbler will be available for a limited time, Boston Market noted. The whitefish entree is apparently a permanent item.

The rotisserie-chicken chain isn’t alone in trying to use health as a customer draw in the new year. Taco Bell recently expanded its choice of Fresco low-fat items, and Starbucks is now allowing patrons to order “skinny” lattes and mochas made with sugar-free syrups.

Boston Market consists of about 630 restaurants. Sun Capital Partners acquired the brand from McDonald’s Corp. in August.
