BOSTON Boston Market and Dave & Buster's are among nine retailers that fell victim to a global identity theft ring in which more than 40 million consumer credit card numbers were stolen, according to a recent announcement here by the U.S. Justice Department.
While 49-unit, Dallas-based casual-dining operator Dave & Buster's revealed earlier this year that its computer system had been hacked, the Justice Department's statement appears to be the first indication that Boston Market was also involved.
Aspokeswoman for 570-plus-unit, Golden, Colo.-based Boston Market said the fast-causal restaurant company had been alerted to a possible data breach in 2004, when a unit in South Florida was hacked. After being notified by authorities, Boston Market shut down all wireless data activity in the store and hired a third party to review the company's computer systems, according to Angela Proctor. She said Boston Market was now confident in its data security.
Dave & Buster's officials earlier this year said the chain had implemented additional security measures to prevent similar data theft incidents.
