McDonald's is planning to open two small format CosMc's locations in Texas this year

McDonald’s will focus on smaller formats to grow its CosMc’s concept

The company plans to open two new locations of the beverage-focused concept in 2025 and close three existing ones

McDonald’s provided an update on its beverage-led CosMc’s concept, which first opened outside of Chicago in late 2023 and has since expanded to seven total locations, with the other six opening in 2024 in Texas. In a message posted to its website, McDonald’s said it will open two new CosMc’s in 2025 – both in Texas – and close three existing locations.

The two new units will be small-format stores, while the three CosMc’s slated to close are larger locations converted from traditional McDonald’s restaurants. The company said smaller format stores have proven to be more effective for the concept.

“Since opening CosMc’s, we have had the benefit of testing out different location sizes and setups – from revamping larger restaurant spaces to building smaller prototype locations that focus more on the drive-thru and digital experience. We learned that the smaller format stores allow us to test new, unique circumstances that are reflective of our customer base,” the company said.

There could also be more locations planned, as the company said the CosMc’s test will continue for the “foreseeable future as it continues to grow.”

“We have just scratched the surface about what we can learn about this growing category,” the company said.

McDonald’s added that the expansion of CosMc’s has allowed the company to increase its knowledge of the beverage space and make updates to the menu based on customer feedback. Best-selling items include the Island Pick Me Up Punch, Churro Cold Brew Frappe, and Sour Energy Burst. The most popular drink customization is the addition of Fruity Popping Boba.

On the food side, Savory Hashbrown Bites have been the top seller across dayparts, while CosMc’s has also sold hundreds of thousands of McPops (which are essentially mini doughnuts).

“CosMc’s customers have responded positively to the menu and embraced the bold flavors,” the company said.
