Chuck E. Cheese's recalls 1.2 million toys

Small parts pose an ingestion risk for children

Chuck E. Cheese's is recalling 1.2 million toy prizes that might lead to injury, according to government agencies in the United States and Canada.

The chain's parent company, CEC Entertainment Inc., is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada to recall 1.1 million light-up rings and 120,000 star-shaped eyeglasses.

If crushed or pulled apart, the plastic casings on the toys could expose batteries, posing an ingestion risk for children. Two incidents have been reported with the rings, one involving a child who swallowed a battery and another who inserted a battery up his nose.

Both toys were manufactured in China. The rings were sold at Chuck E. Cheese’s restaurants between April 2009 through June 2010, while the glasses were offered between April through August 2010.

The government agencies said the light-up rings could be returned to the restaurant for a refund of $1 and tokens or a promotional cup and tokens. The eyeglasses could be returned to a unit for a refund of $4.99 or a prize product.
