MINNEAPOLIS Dairy Queen is set to introduce the Girl Scouts Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard on July 1 and plans to serve the first one to investor Warren Buffett.
The treat, which the chain is predicting will be its best-selling Blizzard ever, combines soft-serve ice cream with the best-selling Girl Scout cookie, the Thin Mint -- something that’s “never been done before,” said Michael Keller, chief brand officer for International Dairy Queen Inc.
As part of a public relations campaign supporting the rollout, Buffett will receive the first Thin Mints Blizzard when he visits his favorite Dairy Queen in Omaha, Neb., said a spokeswoman for Pierson Grant Public Relations. Dairy Queen is part of Berkshire Hathaway, which Buffett owns. Several local Girl Scout troops will be on hand to greet him.
The new Blizzard is a result of a licensing agreement between Dairy Queen and Girl Scouts of the USA.
The average price of the Thin Mint Blizzard is $2.75 for the 12-ounce, $3.20 for the 16-ounce and $3.65 for the 21-ounce. The flavors also can be made into customized cakes, priced at $19.99 for an 8-inch cake and $22.50 for the 12-inch.
On July 20, passengers deplaning from a Northwest Airlines flight in Minneapolis will receive Blizzards to celebrate National Ice Cream Day. A national ad campaign also will support the launch of the treat.
Dairy Queen has more than 5,600 domestic and foreign units.
