BELLEVILLE Pa. A. Reed Hayes III, a long-standing member of the foodservice industry, passed away last week following a brief illness. He was 63.
Hayes most recently was the president and chief executive of Lewistown, Pa.-based DG Power Systems, a company he founded to manufacture small-scale, engine-driven induction systems, which helped businesses reduce energy costs and carbon footprints.
During his career, Hayes held a number of positions in the foodservice industry. Between 1998 and 2000 he served as president of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. He also was president and chief executive of World Tableware International from 1983 to 1996.
During that time he also was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. As a trustee, he served on the school's investment committee, nominating committee, by-laws committee and the development committee, which he chaired.
Tim Ryan, president of the CIA, said, "The entire CIA family mourns Reed's passing and honors his many contributions to our college and the foodservice industry."
At the time of his death, he was a candidate for the office of treasurer of Mifflin County. He graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1968
Hayes is survived by his companion, Charlene Morett; and three children by his first marriage, A. Reed Hayes IV, Jennifer Hayes Johns, and Christopher P. Hayes; and five siblings.
