SAN FRANCISCO An elected official in San Francisco has asked the city attorney’s office to draft an ordinance similar to one passed last week in a nearby county that would prohibit restaurants from bundling toys with children’s meals that do not meet specific nutritional guidelines.
The move Wednesday by Eric Mar, supervisor for the city and county of San Francisco’s District 1, followed the adoption of a similar measure in Santa Clara County. It is intended as a tool to battle the growing problem of childhood obesity. Opponents, including the California Restaurant Association and franchisees of McDonald’s and Burger King, said restaurant chains are already at work devising more healthful options for kids’ menus. Restricting toys in kids’ meals will not address the problem of obesity as well as broadening general education about healthy food choices, they contended, but such rules may upset restaurant patrons with children. An elected official in San Francisco has asked the city attorney’s office to draft an ordinance similar to one passed last week in a nearby county that would prohibit restaurants from bundling toys with children’s meals that do not meet specific nutritional guidelines.
