First it was teachers. Now it’s nurses.
Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. on Thursday announced a buy-one-get-one promotion for all nurses on June 8.
Starting at 3 p.m. to closing time that day, any type of nurse with a valid identification can order a free burrito, bowl, salad or order of tacos with the purchase of another menu item at any Chipotle in the U.S. or Canada. The offer is valid in stores only.
“Nurses are selfless individuals who go above and beyond every day to take care of their patients, working tireless hours and long shifts,” said Chris Arnold, Chipotle’s communications director, in a statement. “Nurses go the extra mile to ensure the best care for their patients, and we are thrilled to be able to recognize and celebrate their dedication by providing them with a delicious meal on us.”
The move is the latest in a series of freebies and buy-one-get-one promotions this year as Chipotle attempts to rebuild traffic scared off by months of foodborne illness reports at the end of 2015.
Chipotle reported a nearly 30-percent decline in same-store sales for its March 31-ended first quarter, with restaurant transactions down more than 21 percent.
Officials with the Denver-based chain said traffic has been improving, in part with the help of freebies and promotions, and that the promotional traffic has translated into repeat customers.

Customers redeemed more than 6 million free burritos or bowls during February and March, for example, along with nearly 1 million free orders of chips and salsa or guacamole.
