Wendy’s plans to offer a super-foods-based salad this summer containing blueberries, strawberries, almonds and a dressing made with açaí juice.
The Berry Almond Chicken Salad was tested last summer, according to the U. S. Highbush Blueberry Council, an organization that promotes blueberry consumption. The salad consists of mixed greens topped with blueberries, strawberries, toasted almonds, Asiago cheese and grilled chicken with a side of fat-free raspberry vinaigrette made with açaí juice.
Wendy’s did not return requests for comment.
Açaí, a berry from the Amazon River region, is promoted as being very high in antioxidants. Almonds and berries also are often singled out as being nutritious.
The Berry Almond Chicken Salad has 460 calories, including 100 calories from the dressing. It will be available from May through August, according to the blueberry promotion group.
The 6,600-unit Wendy's, a division of Atlanta-based Arby’s/Wendy’s Group Inc., revamped its salad line in July 2010 with the introduction of four premium salads: Apple Pecan Chicken Salad, Baja Salad, BLT Cobb Salad and Spicy Chicken Caesar Salad.
