Starbucks said strong holiday sales contributed to a 25-percent increase in net income for the first quarter ended Dec. 29. The Seattle-based coffeehouse chain recorded increases in guest traffic across the globe that ranged from 3 percent in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) to 7 percent in the China/Asia Pacific region. Traffic rose 4 percent in the U.S. During the quarter, Starbucks netted 417 new locations, bringing the global count to 20,184.
