Starbucks 1Q profit rises 25%

Strong holiday sales helped drive the increase

Starbucks said strong holiday sales contributed to a 25-percent increase in net income for the first quarter ended Dec. 29. The Seattle-based coffeehouse chain recorded increases in guest traffic across the globe that ranged from 3 percent in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) to 7 percent in the China/Asia Pacific region. Traffic rose 4 percent in the U.S. During the quarter, Starbucks netted 417 new locations, bringing the global count to 20,184.
 

NET INCOME

Result: $540.7 million, or 71 cents per share
% Increase: 25% (from $432.2 million, or 57 cents per share)

REVENUE

Result: $4.2 billion
% Increase: 12% (from $3.8 billion)

SAME-STORE SALES

% Increase systemwide: 5%


% Increase in the Americas region: 5%


% Increase in the EMEA region: 5%


% Increase in the China/Asia Pacific region: 8%
