Sun Holdings to expand Arby’s in Houston

Franchisee buys units and agrees to develop 15 more locations

A subsidiary of Dallas-based franchisee Sun Holdings Inc. has agreed to build another 15 Arby’s units in Houston, the company said this week.

The agreement comes after Sun Holdings, owned by Guillermo Perales, bought several Arby’s locations in the Houston market from multiple operators in a bid to consolidate the brand in that area.

“The market is wide open for us to develop 15 stores,” Perales said. “It gave us scale to manage the market.”

The deal to develop 15 Arby’s locations in Houston comes after a deal in which Sun agreed to develop 15 units in Dallas. Arby’s is working to expand its unit count following years of improving same-store sales.

Sun also agreed to remodel 12 Arby’s locations under the chain’s new “Inspire” restaurant design, which includes subway tiling, stainless steel, multicolor wood materials, modern lighting and chalkboard graphics.

“Guillermo Perales … is among a select group of premier franchise restaurant developers in the country, and we’re excited about his commitment to expand with Arby’s in Texas,” Greg Vojnovic, Arby’s chief development officer, said in a statement.

Arby’s sales have surged recently, including a same-store sales increase of 8.1 percent last year. The company has 3,300 locations worldwide.

Sun Holdings operates nearly 650 restaurants across several brands, including Arby’s, Burger King, Krispy Kreme, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Golden Corral.
