McD’s global same-store sales up 5.1% in May

OAK BROOK Ill. McDonald's Corp. reported Monday a 5.1-percent increase in global same-store sales in May, which included a 2.8-percent bump in the United States.

Same-store sales rose 7.6 percent in Europe and increased 6.4 percent in the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa region, the company said.

“May’s strong performance tells us that customers around the world continue to choose McDonald’s for the convenience, menu choice, quality and value we offer,” Jim Skinner, McDonald's chief executive, said in a statement.

McDonald's systemwide sales declined 0.4 percent in May, which the company said reflected the negative impact of currency exchange rates. In constant currencies, systemwide sales rose 7 percent, McDonald’s said.

The company said “volatile” foreign exchange rates would continue to hurt its results. McDonald’s said it expected exchange rates would negatively affect second-quarter earnings by 8 cents to 9 cents a share and annual earnings by about 20 cents a share.

McDonald’s May results fell short of its performance in April, when it posted a 6.9-percent jump in global same-store sales, which included increases of 6.1 percent in the United States, 8.4 percent in Europe and 6.5 percent in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa.
