Nation's Restaurant News' top 10 stories of 2023

The top performing story on Nation's Restaurant News this year was 100 Under 100: Emerging restaurant chains take the United States by storm. Emerging restaurant brands are no doubt fun to follow. They’re often bringing new menu and branding ideas to the table, tapping into consumer trends in creative ways that showcase a glimpse into the future. But emerging brands are also important to follow because they could someday be international juggernauts whose every move is emulated by the rest of the industry. 

Another story on this list is America’s Top 25 restaurant groups. To discover those restaurant groups across the U.S. that are blending the creative spirit of independents with the operational and financial scale of chains, NRN partnered with Technomic for this look at the 25 largest restaurant groups by unit count.

Also, before Boston Market was sold to Engage Brands under the Rohan Group of Companies in 2020, the American rotisserie chicken chain was undergoinga brand transformation that was supposed to breathe new life into the struggling Colorado-based restaurant company. But now, four years later, Boston Market’s Denver headquarters have been seized by local authorities and many of the company’s locations are closing, have been abandoned, or have been forced to stock their stores with supermarket food as vendor contracts run out.
