BOSTON Au Bon Pain has signed a master franchise deal with Tokyo-based restaurant operator Reins International Inc., which said it will open 300 of the brand’s bakery-cafe units throughout Japan.

Reins operates about 1,400 restaurants, including the 777 outlets of Gyu-Kaku, the Korean-style Japanese barbecue chain. In addition, Rein operates 1,346 convenience stores under the am/pm brand, and CostIs, Inc., a restaurant distribution company.

Au Bon Pain, which has about 255 units in the United States, also inked a deal last year to step up international expansion in Kuwait and Thailand.
