This is part of Nation’s Restaurant News’ annual Second 100 report, a proprietary census ranking restaurant brands Nos. 101-200 by U.S. systemwide sales and other data. This special report focuses on a smaller, more growth-oriented universe than the Top 100 report.
For the Second 100 universe, it was a year of market share gains for the LSR/Specialty, LSR/Burger, Pizza, Beverage-Snack and Bakery-Cafe segments, based on each category’s percentage of aggregate sales. Casual-Dining chains lost market share in the Latest Year, as did Family-Dining, LSR/Sandwich, Buffet/Grill-Buffet and In-Store chains. The LSR/Mexican category was flat in terms of segment market share. Among inner-segment dynamics, the gains by Taco John’s and Cafe Rio Mexican Grill approximated the market share loss of Baja Fresh Mexican Grill. Here are 10 takeaways from the battle for market share within the Second 100.
