Sunday is no longer a day of rest for Darden Restaurants Inc., especially in its fine-dining division, with the weekend day’s sales increasing markedly since the COVID pandemic, according to Darden CEO Gene Lee.
“Sunday has become a legitimate sales day in fine dining, which was really pre-COVID kind of a throwaway day unless you were in a convention city and the convention started on Sunday,” Lee said Thursday in an analyst conference call following release of first-quarter earnings.
“Sunday is a real legitimate day now, which is taking — operationally — some adjustments for us to get used to,” said Lee, who heads the parent of the Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen and other brands.
