Flavor of the week: The Michelada, where beer and tomato juice come together

The Michelada is a Mexican drink combining beer, tomato juice and spices. Similar to the Bloody Mary, but with lager instead of vodka, it is touted as a hangover cure as well as an easy drinking, low-alcohol warm-weather treat.

There are many recipes for Micheladas, some including the clam-tomato juice drink Clamato. Other common ingredients include lime juice, hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce. The drink is often served, similarly to the Margarita, in a salt-rimmed glass with a lime wedge garnish, but the spice blend Tajín can be used as a garnish, too.

The Michelada lends itself well to multicultural additions, such as soy sauce, teriyaki sauce or wasabi.

Occasionally, the tomato juice is replaced with different fruit or vegetable juices or purées.

Market research firm Datassential reports that 29% of the population knows about Micheladas, with the highest level of recognition among Hispanic consumers, and 14% of consumers have tried it.
