Chef Kathy Fang developed this item as a lower-calorie, higher-fiber alternative to fried rice.
The dish is customizable, with a choice of two of the following items: king oyster mushrooms, fava beans, edamame, green beans, zucchini, pea sprouts, tofu, chicken, roasted, pork, fish or prawns. The item starts at $8.95 at lunch and $10.95 at dinner. Each additional vegetable costs $1, and each additional meat or seafood costs $2.
For the most popular version, with pork and herbs, Fang tosses steamed brown rice in a bowl with salt and pepper, roasted pork, caramelized onions, green onions, red onions, bell peppers, minced ginger, minced garlic and sesame oil.
Fang is the sister restaurant of the critically acclaimed House of Nanking, also in San Francisco.
