NFL players turned restaurateurs and eatertainment’s struggles

Plus, the latest on all of this year’s fall menu trends

This week on Extra Serving, a podcast from Nation’s Restaurant News, editor-in-chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso sat down to discuss the week’s news.

First, they talk about all of the NFL players who have gone on to become restaurateurs. That list includes reigning Super Bowl Champions Travis Kelce and Jason Mahomes, who are opening a steakhouse in 2025, as well as former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz and former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Donnell Thompson. See a list here.

Then, Oches and Kelso talk about recent news from Topgolf and Pinstripes that suggests the eatertainment category may not be riding as high as it once was. Topgolf is being spun off to shareholders of Topgolf Callaway Brands, while Pinstripes’ recent earnings results fell below analysts’ expectations.

Then, NRN senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn joined the podcast to talk about this year’s fall menu trends. Of course this includes pumpkin spice everything, but also apple, smoke, and much more. Keep up with all of the menu news at restaurant chains in Thorn’s weekly column Menu Tracker.
