PHILADELPHIA Hundreds of foodservice workers at two New Jersey racetracks could face a lockout next week if the union representing them fails to resolve a contract dispute with Aramark Corp., the on-site foodservice provider for the tracks.
Approximately 320 members of UNITE HERE are renegotiating their employment contract with Philadelphia-based Aramark. Among the concessions they’re seeking is job security, including a promise that the company would recognize the union and a hiring preference for members at any new concessions facility that opens at Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford and Monmouth Park in Oceanport. If the contract -- without the promise of job security -- is rejected at tomorrow’s vote, Aramark could opt to lock the workers out on May 7, union officials said.
Aramark spokeswoman Kristine Grow, who declined to discuss specifics of the negotiation, said the company is “working hard to come to an agreement that works for everyone."
"We do understand employees will be voting on the collective bargaining agreement on Saturday ... certainly hope there are no work interruptions of any kind,” she said.
Union officials said they are close to an agreement with Aramark on all other aspects of the contract.
