The Habit Restaurants Inc. has named Karin Timpone, global marketing officer at Marriott International, as its first female board member.
Timpone, whose appointment was effective Oct. 23, will serve on the governance and compensation committees.
The move comes on the heels of the passing of a new California law that requires a publicly held domestic general corporation, or foreign corporation based in California, to have at least one female board member by the close of the 2019 calendar year.

Habit CEO Russ Bendel said Timpone brings extensive global media and marketing expertise to the Irvine, Calif.-based chain.
“We believe that her impressive experience with a focus on innovation and transformation of brands will add valuable perspective to our board of directors,” he said in a statement.
Prior to joining Marriott, Timpone was senior vice president of digital media for The Walt Disney Company. She previously held leadership roles at Yahoo!, Universal Studios, Inc., and The Seagram Company Ltd.
In June, Timpone was named one of Forbes’ 2018 Most Influential CMOs.
