Le Francais closes

WHEELING Ill. Le Francais, perhaps the most famous French restaurant in the Chicago area for more than three decades, has closed.

Current owner Michael Moran could not be reached for comment, but it was widely known that business had slowed in recent years for the suburban landmark.

The restaurant, which chef Jean Banchet opened in 1973, quickly became a popular destination for fans of classical French cuisine. It won many accolades, including a Mobil five-star rating and a designation by one magazine as the nation’s best restaurant.

After Banchet retired in 1989, other chefs tried to sustain the restaurant as fine dining turned decidedly more casual. Current chef Roland Liccioni was not an owner.

Arecorded message on the restaurant’s answering machine says that Le Francais has temporarily suspended service. However, insiders say they believe the closing will be permanent.
