On Monday, KFC is turning its iconic mac & cheese side dish into a main entrée with the debut of Mac & Cheese Bowls.
The new bowl is a hefty helping of the cheesy pasta topped with the chain's famous popcorn chicken and three different types of grated cheese. The quasi-menu hack, which uses existing ingredients that have never been combined before, is made possible by the chain’s new “scoop to order” kitchen initiative.
The back-of-the-house program, which rolled out nationwide in early May, eliminates the pre-assembly of side dishes such as coleslaw and mashed potatoes and gravy. In the past, each side dish was stacked on a shelf, waiting to be boxed.
