McDonald’s USA LLC will bring the 40-year-old McRib into the digital age next week by giving away 10 non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, as part of the annual sandwich’s comeback promotion.
“Our McRib NFTs are digital versions of the fan favorite sandwich — almost as saucy as the McRib itself — and we’re giving them away to a few lucky fans on Twitter beginning Nov. 1,” the Chicago-based quick-service brand said in a statement.
The company in September had announced the return of the McRib, a formed pork patty with barbecue sauce, onions and pickle on a roll, for a limited time at participating restaurants.
The McRib NFTs are pieces of virtual art that can’t be duplicated. Restaurants have been sampling NFTs and cryptocurrencies this year.
The Twitter-based NFT giveaway comes with a few rules. Entrants must follow @McDonalds on Twitter and retweet from a public account the sweepstakes Invitation tweet any time between Nov. 1 through Nov. 7.
“By Nov. 12, we’ll select 10 fans who will receive the exclusive McRib NFT to add to their personal collection and enjoy even when it’s not on the menu,” the company said.
“With the McRib NFT, you’ll never again have to say goodbye to the sandwich you love,” it added.
McDonald’s USA has about 14,000 restaurants in the United States.
