Baja Fresh's new owners tweak the menu

THOUSAND OAKS Calif. Baja Fresh Mexican Grill has introduced a 23-ounce Nacho Burrito, the first in a number of new menu items to be rolled out nationally next week. The changes mark the first changes in Baja Fresh's menu since the fast-casual brand was acquired last year from Wendy's International Inc. by Cinnabon franchisee David Kim and investors.

James Walker, president of the 292-unit chain, described the new 23-ounce burrito as "a plate of nachos wrapped in a tortilla," with strips of tortilla adding crunch to the mix of grilled chicken, black and pinto beans, rice, sliced jalapenos, salsa crema and a smoky new cheese sauce called "queso fundido." The recommended price is $5.75.

The items slated to be introduced next week include a mango-chipotle chicken salad for a suggested $6.45; Pronto nachos, featuring queso fundido and chips for $1.35; and two new salsa varieties on the salsa bar. In addition, Baja Fresh will begin offering two dessert options, a churro rolled in cinnamon-sugar for a suggested 99 cents, and an Aztec chocolate-chip cookie with a hint of cinnamon for a suggested $1.29.

Walker said the new items are designed to offer value and flavor, as well as improved speed of service.

Baja Fresh, based here, was acquired by the Kim-led investment group for $31 million.
