Starbucks aims big in China

SEATTLE About 20 percent of Starbucks Corp.'s international growth will occur in China this year, a market that has the potential for more than 200 million customers, an executive of the coffeehouse chain said in a conference call with financial analysts.

Martin Coles, president of Starbucks Corp.'s international division, said the company expects to open 200 stores in China by 2008.

Chairman Howard Schultz said Starbucks already has a strong presence in Beijing and 17 provinces and he anticipates the company will also do well in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

"We are dreaming very big in China," Schultz said.

Starbucks and its licensees operate more than 13,000 coffeehouses worldwide.
