KISSIMMEE Fla. Subway is incorporating more environmentally friendly business practices into its system of more than 28,000 franchised sandwich outlets, the chain said on Wednesday.
As part of the initiative, Subway's first Eco-Store opened here earlier this month, boasting such features as a high-efficiency HVAC system, day lighting, low-flow water fixtures, and building and decor materials made from sustainable materials.
The store was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Green Building Council. Subway said more Eco-Stores are in the works and that it is working with the council to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, certification for the stores.
The chain also said on Wednesday that it is rolling out napkins made from 100 percent recycled materials.
Subway is owned by Milford, Conn.-based Doctor's Associates.
