Wild pitch a hit as ‘screwball’ sandwich makes its debut

CINCINNATI —Mayor Mark Mallory threw an exceptionally bad first pitch at the Cincinnati Reds’ recent opening-day game here, but one restaurateur turned the politician’s lack of sporting prowess into a new menu item for his deli.

According to the Associated Press, John Geisen, president of Izzy’s deli, created a new sandwich in honor of Mallory’s pitch, which bounced several feet in front of the first-base line instead of home plate. Called the Mark Mallory Screwball, the sandwich consists of “any two meats tossed in the general direction of a bun or two pieces of bread.” —Mayor Mark Mallory threw an exceptionally bad first pitch at the Cincinnati Reds’ recent opening-day game here, but one restaurateur turned the politician’s lack of sporting prowess into a new menu item for his deli.

“This is wonderful,” Mallory said. “Who wouldn’t want a sandwich named for them?” —Mayor Mark Mallory threw an exceptionally bad first pitch at the Cincinnati Reds’ recent opening-day game here, but one restaurateur turned the politician’s lack of sporting prowess into a new menu item for his deli.
