Tilman Fertitta debuts Mastro’s Steakhouse in Houston

Owner of Landry’s Inc. opens restaurant in 10-acre development

Fertitta Entertainment today opened its ninth Mastro’s Steakhouse in the company’s hometown of Houston as part of owner Tilman Fertitta’s new 10-acre mixed-use development, The Post Oak.

“I have always wanted to open Mastro’s one-of-a-kind, masterful, high-end dining experience in my hometown,” said Fertitta in a statement. “Mastro’s will be the first restaurant to open at The Post Oak, with the remainder of the luxury destination development slated to open in early 2018.”

The Houston Mastro’s steakhouse covers about 12,000 square feet and seats 400, a spokesperson said. It includes four private dining rooms as well as a garden terrace.

Fertitta bought the Woodland Hills, Calif.-based Mastro’s Restaurants LLC in May 2013, when it had 11 units. With the Houston opening, the Mastro’s brand now has nine steakhouses and five Mastro’s Ocean Club units.

Fertitta Entertainment, solely owned by chairman and CEO Fertitta, owns Landry’s Inc., the Golden Nugget Casinos and Hotels and the Houston Rockets basketball team.

The company said Mastro’s Steakhouse offers 16 different cuts of meat, fresh seafood and raw bar offerings and a sushi selection developed by chef Angel Carbajal of Cabo San Lucas’s Niksan.

Michael Colbert, executive chef of the Houston Mastro’s, oversees the dinner-only menu, which includes items exclusive to the location’s menu, such as Garlic Roasted Bone Marrow, Crispy Shrimp and Scallop Bird Nest Dumplings and Japanese A5 Wagyu beef on a hot stone. The restaurant also features Mastro’s standards such as lobster mashed potatoes and warm butter cake.

“We’re excited to unveil an elevated dining experience to Houston foodies and steak lovers alike,” Colbert said.

Mastro’s remains one of the highest volume restaurant brands in Nation’s Restaurant News’ Second 100 census, reporting $14.3 million estimated sales per unit for the 2016 fiscal year.

Fertitta Entertainment’s Landry’s Inc. owns and operates more than 600 properties in 36 states, including such brands as Morton’s The Steakhouse, The Oceanaire, Chart House, Landry’s Seafood House, Rainforest Cafe, Saltgrass Steak House, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Claim Jumper, Mitchell’s Fish Market and McCormick & Schmick’s. The company re-acquired Joe’s Crab Shack in August.
