The top 10 pizza chains

Classic brands are facing new competition from emerging chains

Domino’s, a steady favorite in the category, grew over 11% in the latest year. That’s more than any other brand in the top 10. Not only have they been in the news a lot lately, but they’ve been trying to reach out to customers in new and inventive ways for over a year.

On the other end, Papa John’s faced a rough 2018 with the departure of their CEO and founder amidst a very public scandal. Their systemwide sales decreased 9.8% year over year but with a resurgence in the sports world and partnerships resuming, where do they fall on the list now?

MOD Pizza, just missing the cut at number 11 with $390.7 million in latest year sales, grew an astounding 44.7% in sales year over year. Coming up right behind them was Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza with $326.6 million in Latest Year systemwide sales with a 17% annual growth.

The category is growing and there is always room for new competitors who are busting at the seams to compete. While the current list is a mash-up of tried and true favorites, there are hot new brands ready to pounce and doing interesting things.

These systemwide sales numbers are from Nation’s Restaurant News Top 200 database and research from the Latest Year ended closest to Dec. 31, 2018.
