Dunkin’ Donuts debuts mobile payment via Google Wallet

Customers can pay at locations or at drive thru with virtual card

Dunkin’ Donuts unveiled a new mobile payment option Thursday that will make it easier for customers to leave their wallets at home.

The Canton, Mass.-based quick-service operator said U.S. customers can now buy and reload virtual Dunkin’ Donuts cards using Google Wallet though the chain’s mobile app or online. The feature is available for those with Android devices.

Users can securely store their credit cards or debit cards on Google Wallet and link it to the app, which will offer a “buy with Google” button for payment, thus sparing customers from having to manually type in credit card and billing information.

“Google Wallet offers our guests with Android devices another quick and convenient way to load or reload a Dunkin’ Donuts Card within the Dunkin’ Mobile App, to purchase favorite Dunkin’ Donuts food and beverages quickly and get back to their busy day,” Scott Hudler, vice president, global consumer engagement at Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc., said in a statement.

The chain is working toward offering mobile ordering and pay-ahead options, which will allow customers to skip the pick-up line.

“Developing and delivering technologies to enhance guests’ experience, including the Dunkin’ Mobile App, DD Perks rewards program, and, eventually, mobile ordering, will continue to differentiate our brand as we continue our growth throughout the country,” he added.

The app is free and available in both English and Spanish. Users can scan their virtual DD Cards either at locations or at the drive thru.

Mobile payment technology is increasingly a must-have for restaurants.

A growing number of chains, including Domino’s Pizza, Papa John’s and Panda Express, have integrated Google Wallet into their apps.

Earlier this week, the online ordering site ChowNow announced a new partnership that makes Google Wallet available to restaurant clients across the country. Those with an Android phone can also tap the “buy with Google” button to pay when ordering through ChowNow.

Dunkin’ Donuts officials said the chain’s app has been downloaded 11 million times since it launched in 2012.
