This week on Nation's Restaurant News the top story was Here's what we learned about California's wage increase after one quarter. The second quarter was an important litmus test for restaurant operators with a footprint in California, as it marked the first reporting period following the state’s implementation of AB 1228 on April 1. The law raised the minimum wage at quick-service restaurants to $20 an hour, or by 25%.
In other news, the allure of (and demand for) nostalgia has gripped the restaurant industry and now Taco Bell is getting involved. The company announced today it is testing a "Nostalgic Menu" at select Southern California locations for a limited time, while also noting that it is looking to bring these items nationwide later this year for a limited time.
For now, they’re available at three restaurants – in Fullerton, Irvine, and Brea, Calif. – while supplies last. The menu features some of the most coveted items from across the decades, such as the Tostada, Green Burrito, Meximelt, Gordita, and Caramel Apple Empanada.
Also, the Jodeco Road exit in McDonough, Ga., looks like any other growing thoroughfare off a major interstate, peppered with gas stations, a Starbucks, a Costco, a high school, new homes, and more. It now also features a massive and unique Chick-fil-A restaurant visible from blocks away, complete with extensive wayfinding features at the entrance that could rival a small theme park, and four clearly marked lanes flowing under and beside a raised kitchen.
