Nancy Silverton, chef/co-owner, Pizzeria Mozza; culinary partner, Triple Beam
Known for: Nancy Silverton has been a cornerstone of Los Angeles’ diverse restaurant scene for decades. She built and sold the La Brea Bakery brand, sparking an artisanal bread movement. With her former husband, she was partner in the famed restaurant Campanile, which closed in 2012 after 23 years. She then went on to build the Pizzeria Mozza empire, which includes Pizzeria Mozza and Osteria Mozza, Mozza2Go and the more meat-focused Chi Spacca, all of which New York-based B&B Hospitality Group co-owns. Separately, Silverton is a culinary partner in the Roman-style pizza concept Triple Beam.
Power move: When B&B co-founder Mario Batali was accused of sexual harassment and assault, it was arguably Silverton’s long-established reputation in Los Angeles that shielded her restaurants from the taint of association. Batali was a partner, but Silverton remained in charge and her kitchens have long been known as egalitarian, where women have thrived.
What’s next: Silverton’s team confirms new concepts are coming to Los Angeles in 2019 — more than one — but details have not been fully fleshed out yet. Reports in 2018 indicated a Spanish concept might be next.
