On Friday Tropical Smoothie Café will give away up to 500 free smoothies at each of its 300 stores around the country to customers wearing flip-flop sandals to celebrate Flip-Flop Day and raise money for children with life-threatening illnesses.
Besides giving free smoothies to celebrate the start of summer, Destin, Fla.-based smoothie chain also hopes that customers might want to chip in a dollar for the chain’s charity partner, Camp Sunshine in Maine. The camp is for kids with life-threatening illnesses and their families and it costs about $2,000 to send each family, said Bonnie Szasz, one of the managers at a Tropical Smoothie in downtown Tampa.
“Each store tries to send at least one child. If we give people a free smoothie they can help out and give a dollar,” Szasz said.
Smoothies aren’t the only freebie that consumers can look forward to this summer.
Jake’s Wayback Burgers, which is based in Cheshire, Conn. with 27 locations in the mid-Atlantic, will celebrate the first day of summer on June 21 by giving away free 12-ounce Strawberry Lemonade hand-dipped milkshakes. The free milkshakes will take place at all locations, and will run all day, while supplies last.
And on July 8, Chick-fil-A will celebrate Cow Appreciation Day by giving away nearly half a million chicken sandwiches nationwide to customers who come to any of their restaurants dressed as a cow.
