Meal kit services, led by Blue Apron, could eat into restaurant business, once they fix finances

The meal kit delivery business, led by the soon-to-be-public Blue Apron, could represent a major threat to the restaurant business — particularly dine-in concepts that have been losing business for years.

That’s according to a new report from the consulting firm Pentallect, which suggests that rapid growth of the sector could take “millions of occasions” from restaurants as it expands.

“We think it’s really more of a threat to actually impact full service negatively,” said Bob Goldin, a partner with the Chicago-based firm.

At this point, however, the impact is small, yet the sector’s growth of 25 percent to 30 percent a year could make it a real threat in the coming years.
