Subway to add flatbread

MILFORD Conn. Subway will add flatbread as a sandwich option starting Nov. 17, a spokesman for the chain said. He indicated that the flatbread would not be baked in the restaurants, a marked departure for the brand.

The spokesman, Rob Wilson, said sandwiches made with the new bread will be equivalent in size to the chain’s 6-inch subs and will sell for about $4.29.

Any sandwich currently available as a 6-inch sub will be offered on the flatbread, Wilson said. In addition, he said, the chain will add Chicken Florentine and Steak & Bacon Melt flatbread sandwiches.

The flatbread sandwiches will be available warmed or toasted, but the bread will be baked off the premises, he added. Fresh-baked sandwich bread has been a strong signature of Subway. Dough supplied to franchised stores is finished off in ovens that are often visible behind or adjacent to the sandwich line.

Anumber of direct competitors, including Quiznos, have been offering sandwiches on flatbreads for some time. Dunkin’ Donuts recently expanded its flatbread line to include breakfast sandwiches.

Subway franchises more than 30,000 units worldwide, including nearly 22,000 U.S. locations.
