Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. is turning to a tried-and-true tactic to retain hourly employees: dangle more money before them.

The Newport Beach, Calif.-based chain is launching a bonus program that could result in an extra month’s pay each year for eligible hourly employees. The tactic, industry analysts say, is clever, as it provides hourly workers quarterly cash bonuses in exchange for helping restaurants meet revenue goals.

“They are rewarding their staff for building their business while being guest-facing brand champions, which is typically only given to management,” said restaurant consultant Jenny Companion with The Fifteen Group Inc., a Toronto-based hospitality consultancy firm.
