Shake Shack Inc. gave its gluten-sensitive customers a holiday gift in the form of gluten-free burger buns.

The New York-based chain this week introduced the gluten-free bun option for its burgers and chicken sandwich to all U.S. locations, other than nontraditional units inside stadiums.

The gluten-free bun costs $1 more. The company announced the new bun on a Facebook post.

The company tested the bun at a few locations over the summer and then introduced it nationwide this week, a company spokeswoman said Friday.

The move comes as restaurant chains continue to work toward offering more gluten-free options to their menus. An estimated 18 million Americans could be gluten sensitive, but even more Americans are cutting gluten out of their diets in the belief that such diets are healthier.
